Hastings has grand ideas of becoming a detective himself, priding himself in having “a certain talent for deduction,” so he’s quite excited to work alongside Poirot. ![]() Before long, though, Hastings gets swept up in trying to help his old friend Hercule Poirot solve the murder of John’s stepmother, Emily Inglethorp. Hastings is glad to accept this invitation, especially when he meets John’s beautiful wife, Mary Cavendish, to whom Hastings takes an immediate liking. While on leave, Hastings runs into John Cavendish, an old friend who invites him to spend time at Styles Court, his family’s estate in the English countryside. The novel’s narrator, Arthur Hastings is a 30-year-old soldier on leave from World War I after having been injured in battle. ![]()

![]() I was hooked for a while there - but finding these other factors very distracting, and now contemplating a DNF at only halfway. Another actor insists on using old English pronunciation of /hw/ instead of the more natural /wh/… H-white, h-where, it’s relentless. The voices don’t do the text any favours, although the text does possess some charm, aside from that aforementioned. The voice actors are also unsuitable - ironically here, a 28 year old characters’ voice is played by someone much older and it is incredibly distracting due to the inconsistency. There is no other context to account for her loss of beauty but age. ![]() But alas, these things pass by unnoticed (probably seem pedantic to you reading this, even), as it is so normal in our culture to treat older people as inferior, no longer capable of being beautiful (character mentioned is presumably only in her 30s / 40s no less, based on surrounding characters’ ages). And the character who thought this is supposed to be somewhat sympathetic to us. As if at 35 a women is drained of her beauty. ![]() ![]() The unashamed ageism of this part “she was probably beautiful once”, was incredibly off-putting for me. Natural blonde hair, blue eyes and large breasts that she was showing off in a v-neck shirt and cardigan sweater.” Get used to these descriptions, even from female characters the male gaze of the author makes itself evident. The Kind Worth Killing - A Novel Peter Swanson Publisher: William Morrow 2 37 0 Summary A devious tale of psychological suspense perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Trainand is soon to be a major movie directed by Agnieszka Holland. “Even with the clown-like makeup you could tell she was pretty - and had probably once been beautiful. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Forrest is kicked off the team when he's informed that Jenny has died and leaves town for her funeral. To make ends meet he gets a job as a janitor in a strip club, where he meets a former college football teammate who gets in a tryout for the New Orleans Saints. Dan sells off his share of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and the company eventually goes under. In 1980, the shrimp market has exploded, and Forrest cannot keep up with the demand. The story suggests that the real-life events surrounding the film have affected Forrest's life. However, the character is not an idiot savant, as in the first book, but more similar to Tom Hanks' "warmhearted dope." The text intentionally contains grammar and spelling mistakes in order to indicate the character's deficient education and cognitive difficulties, albeit less frequently than its predecessor, reflecting that Forrest is a more mature and somewhat more astute man. On the first page, Forrest Gump tells readers "Don't ever let nobody make a movie of your life's story," and "Whether they get it right or wrong, it don't matter." It was written to chronicle Forrest's life throughout the 1980s. ![]() It is the sequel to his 1986 novel Forrest Gump and the Academy Award-winning 1994 film of the same name starring Tom Hanks.
